A community worker remains missing after a deadly landslide struck the Hanjia subdistrict in Pengshui Miao and Tujia autonomous county, Chongqing, while he was helping evacuate residents, sparking concern among his colleagues and local residents.
The man, identified as Gong Baodong, was working with the Shatuo community, where the landslide occurred.
The landslide occurred at around 9:10 am on Friday, killing eight people and leaving 34 others missing as of press time.
According to Zhang Weiling, Party secretary of the Shatuo community, community workers spotted scattered falling rocks at around 8 am and immediately issued an alert. Local authorities quickly organized the evacuation of residents to safety.
However, a landslide struck during the evacuation, burying some people. Zhang said Gong lost contact at around 9 am while assisting with the relocation effort.
Gong, in his 20s, joined the Shatuo community as a community worker in May 2025 after graduating from Southwest University of Political Science and Law. Colleagues described him as responsible, diligent and committed to self-improvement.
The other three community workers on duty at the time were confirmed safe, Zhang added.
