“What makes this one particularly important is that it’s the only survivor life jacket that has ever been auctioned. There are only three other life jackets from survivors that are fully documented and we know whose they were so they are that rare.”
“These record-breaking prices illustrate the continuing interest in the Titanic story, and the respect for the passengers and crew whose stories are immortalized by these items of memorabilia,” auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said.
"Inside, Titanic resembled a floating palace. The first-class accommodations rivaled the finest hotels in Europe, featuring ornate dining halls, a swimming pool, Turkish baths, elevators."
The size of Titanic gave the ship’s designers plenty of space to work with as they appointed the vessel in luxurious style. The facilities for passengers were unheard of and breathtaking in their scope and workmanship. Titanic boasted Turkish baths, a gymnasium, squash courts, two covered promenade decks, and even a swimming pool. The opulence of the first-class dining rooms, lounges, and reading room outdid any of the grandest hotels on land. A typical first-class menu included oysters, filet mignons, sirloin steak, pate de foie gras, and freshly made cream cakes. The double-stairway and glass cupola of the main dining room gave the illusion passengers were entering a palace. This staircase was a marvel of engineering in itself and descends seven decks into the bowels of the ship.
“But what we are talking about is every man, woman and child on that ship, every one of them has a story to tell. You have 2,200 chapters within that story. Those chapters are told by the ship’s memorabilia 114 years later,” he says.
“That’s the thing with the Titanic. It basically encapsulates the spectrum of human emotion. The happiness of being on the ship, the excitement of sailing off, the hope. And then it turns completely on its head and you’ve got the horror and the sadness – those other emotions that are complete polar opposites.”
