This Collection welcomes submissions that explore the therapeutic potential of stem cells or describe the use of stem cells and stem cell-derived products to treat human disease. We welcome submission of studies providing basic molecular and cellular insights into stem cell biology, preclinical and clinical studies, and studies that improve the production of human stem cell therapies.

Cancer-host reciprocal interactions

In this Collection, the editors at Nature Communications, Communications Biology, Communications Medicine and Scientific Reports welcome the submission of primary research articles that focus on the reciprocal interactions between cancer and the host and that go beyond the tumour micro-environment. We are interested in studies investigating the contribution of different body systems (such as the nervous, endocrine, digestive systems) or the influence of host systemic factors, such as alterations of diet, microbiome and metabolism, on cancer progression. On the other hand, we are also interested in studies describing how cancer affects the host homeostasis such as cancer-associated cachexia or de-regulation of different organ function.

Researchers have been focusing on the study of our solar system for centuries, looking at the physics, dynamics, as well as the composition of solar system bodies. Our solar system – which includes the Sun, eight planets, five dwarf planets, hundreds of moons and millions of asteroids, comets, and meteoroids – has been the centre of studies covering a broad range of fields from physics to biology, from chemistry to geology. Ground-based as well as space instrumentations have been essential to extend our knowledge of our solar system, shedding light on its formation and current state as well as on the origins of life.

Topological physical systems and materials

In condensed matter physics as well as in photonics, systems which exhibit topological behaviour are widely studied. Using the theory of topology on materials, topological photonics look at the study of novel technique to control and manipulate light. Whilst electronic topological insulators are materials presenting an exotic bandgap which supports a conductor behaviour on the surface and an insulator behaviour in the bulk, photonic topological insulators allow the flow of light only on their surface. Next generation of topological physical systems are expected to be paramount in the next generation of quantum technologies; topological photonics systems could be also of interest for their use in solar cell structures to achieve innovative renewable energy technologies.
