Stress is something inevasible every time when we mention competitive sports. So how to deal with stress has long been a vital topic for competitive sports. Are you curious about how the “champion” teachers, “star” players, and sports enthusiasts at Sun Yat-sen University deal with stress? Without further ado, let’s dive into three “dances under pressure”and unveil what is behind it.
每每提到竞技体育，压力总是“不能幸免”。如何与压力相处，也就成为了竞技体育中一个必不可少的课题。而在“冠军”老师、“明星”球员、体育爱好者云集的中山大学，他们又是怎么样面对压力的呢？下面，让我们走近三个压力之下的拼搏故事并揭示潜藏在其背后的情感。
Zhang Jiewen: Efforts Paid off after Days Accompanied by Tears and Sweat
张洁雯的奥运冠军之旅：
汗泪常相伴，苦尽终甘来
Zhang Jiewen, a former badminton Olympic champion, is now an associate professor in the Sports Department of Sun Yat-sen University and the head coach of the university’s school badminton team. Walking around the badminton court in the campus gymnasium, holding rackets and instructing students carefully have become the daily routine for Zhang Jiewen. In the eyes of Zhang’s students, she is an admirable “champion” teacher with full patience and responsibility. Looking back on Zhang Jiewen’s Olympic journey, her success is also inseparable from her pure conviction under great pressure.
曾获得羽毛球奥运冠军的张洁雯现在是中山大学体育部的副教授和校羽毛球队的主教练，在平常的工作中，她会在校园体育馆的羽毛球场上手握球拍巡场、认真指导学生动作。在同学们眼里，她耐心负责，是令人敬佩的“冠军”老师。而回首张洁雯的奥运冠军之路，却也离不开其在重压之下坚定自我的纯粹本心。

Both tangible and intangible pressure appeared during Zhang’s preparation for 2004 Athens Olympics.
在备战2004年雅典奥运会的过程中，张洁雯遇到了生理和心理上的双重压力。
Physical pressure ran through the whole process of training for the Olympics. Speaking of life in the national team, Zhang Jiewen referred to the word BITTER. When Zhang Jiewen was in the national team, women's doubles were practiced together with men's doubles. And in many cases, the training intensity of women's doubles was even greater than that of men's doubles.
体力压力贯穿张洁雯雅典奥运的备战全程。说起在国家队的生活，张洁雯用一个“苦”字形容。张洁雯说，自己在国家队时，女双都是和男双一起练的，很多时候，女双的训练强度甚至大过男双。
During each training session, Zhang Jiewen and her teammates went through three tough workouts, each of which lasted for 45 to 50 minutes. With clothes soaked in sweat, Zhang Jiewen was out of breath every time after the three tough workouts. And then came the lower intensity exercise. Sometimes after training for the whole morning, Zhang and her teammates still had to climb the Fragrant Hills twice with heavy weights. Such particularly torturous workouts had become Zhang Jiewen’s daily routine. Exhausted and stressed, Zhang Jiewen fell asleep sleep as soon as she touched the pillow.
张洁雯和队友们每次训练要上三段强度，每一段持续45至50分钟。三段强度之后，气都喘不过来，浑身衣服早就湿透了。接着是一段轻训练。有时上午训练完了，张洁雯和队友们还要负重爬两趟香山。这样艰辛的训练已经成为张洁雯日常生活的一部分。每到晚上休息时，被疲倦压着的她往往倒头就睡。
Apart from physical pressure, psychological pressure was also an unavoidable issue during Zhang’s preparation for 2004 Athens Olympics. At that time, the Women's Doubles was the most stable gold point of Chinese national badminton team, for its strong dominance in the world badminton world, which was called the "golden generation" of women's doubles. And because of its renowned competence, the Chinese national badminton team carried heavy expectations of Chinese people. Winning the championship seemed to be something that most people took for granted at that time. With such intangible pressure lingering in her mind, Zhang Jiewen chose to accept and get along with it. Zhang told herself, “As the saying goes, with great power, comes great responsibility. It is pretty natural for people to expect professional athletes to stand out in the competition.” In 2003, Zhang Jiewen and her teammate Yang Wei ranked first in the world.
备战2004年雅典奥运会期间，除了身体上的压力，心理上的负担也不容小觑。当时，女双是中国羽毛球队最稳定的金牌点，在世界羽坛有着强大的统治力，堪称女子双打的“黄金一代”。实力卓著的中国国家羽毛球队也因此承载了国人的厚望。赢得比赛、拿到冠军在当时大多数人眼中，似乎已然成为一件理所应当的事情。面对这种无形的压力，张洁雯选择了接受并与之共处。她告诉自己：“能力越大，责任越大。你本来就是吃这碗饭的，全国人民对你的要求自然要高。” 2003年，“杨维/张洁雯”组合的羽毛球女双排名升至世界第一。
As time went by, the 2004 Athens Olympics arrived as scheduled. Zhang Jiewen and her teammate Yang Wei cruised to victory with irresistible force in the first few rounds, ended with getting into the final without doubt. However, the Olympic journey of Zhang and Yang was not all smooth sailing as they were faced with another competent Chinese pair, Gao Ling and Huang Sui. With great longing and strong determination for the gold medal, the two sides played very close. Yang Wei and Zhang Jiewen lost the first set 7-15. Facing the failure, Zhang felt that intangible pressure overwhelmed her like floods at once. Fortunately, they did not lose heart and won two sets 15-4 and 15-8 in a row to beat the other team 2-1, winning the precious gold medal.
时间流逝，2004年雅典奥运会如期举办。在前几轮比赛中，“杨维/张洁雯”组合势如破竹，毫无悬念地拿到了总决赛的入场券。然而，她们的奥运之路并非一帆风顺，因为在总决赛中，她们即将迎战同样实力强劲的中国组合“高崚/黄穗”。4位姑娘都想夺得这枚女双金牌，双方打得相当胶着。杨维/张洁雯以7比15先失一局，霎时，压力如潮水般笼罩着张洁雯。所幸张洁雯和杨维并没有失去信心，两人齐心协力，以15：4、15：8连扳两局，从而以2：1大比分战胜队友，夺得一枚宝贵的金牌。
With thunderous applause, Zhang Jiewen clinched the Olympic gold medal with her partner Yang Wei in Badminton Women's Doubles in the 2004 Athens Olympics. National flag flying high and ribbons dancing in the air, they held the medals right beside their cheeks, enjoying the pure happiness without pressure. This shining moment was not only a testament to her extraordinary athletic ability, but also a reward for her pure persistence under great pressure.
雷动掌声中，张洁雯和队友杨维一同站上最高领奖台。漫天金纸下，国旗高高升起，奖牌举至脸旁。这一刻，苦尽甘来。这一辉煌时刻不仅是她卓越竞技能力的体现，更是对她重压之下仍坚韧顽强的最好回报。

Zhang Jiewen told us that Olympic champions also experience the fear of uncertainty after experiencing the physical challenges of intense training and the mental pressure of losing competitions. At every fork in the road, she had doubts about whether her efforts were worthwhile. But in the end, she chose to move on, with pure love for the country.
比赛结束后，张洁雯在接受采访时表示，即使是奥运冠军，也在经历过高强度训练的生理挑战和比赛失利的心理压力后，对不确定的未来抱有恐惧。在每一个“岔路口”，她都曾怀疑过自己的努力是否有价值。但最终，她都选择了心怀为国争光的信念，纯粹前行。
Zhang Jiewen’s words echoes with Luo Wei, Zhang’s colleague at Sun Yat-sen University. Luo Wei, 2004 Athens Olympic Games women's taekwondo 67kg champion, once said in a speech:“In the international arena, when the Five Starred Red Flag rises, and our national anthem rings, the excitement, warmth, and pride flow through my heart, helping me gain a deeper insight into what patriotism is in an era of peace.”
无独有偶，张洁雯老师的同事、同样在中山大学任教的罗微老师，也是2004年雅典奥运会女子跆拳道67公斤级冠军，也曾在一次讲话中说到：“在国际赛场上，当五星红旗升起，义勇军进行曲奏响，心中流淌过的激动、触动、感动，让我在和平年代深刻体会到什么叫家国情怀。

Sun Yat-sen University Men's Volleyball Team: Dreams Come True after Overcoming All Obstacles
中大男排的CUVA夺金之路：
披荆又斩棘，梦圆荣耀归
Facing with tough tasks, strong opponents, and depressing failures, Sun Yat-sen University Men's Volleyball Team (High-level Group) has gone through a chequered journey.
任务艰巨、对手强劲、挫折屡现，中山大学男子排球队（高水平组）的CUVA之旅可谓一波三折。
Standing on the top national podium is never easy as the team needs to excel in all stages of the competition. In the 2023-2024 season, the competition of the China University Volleyball League is divided into three parts: provincial competition, regional competition (division), twenty-four final and finals, and the three stages are linked and advanced one by one.
站上全国最高领奖台绝非易事，球队需要在各个阶段的比赛中脱颖而出。2023-2024年赛季，中国大学生排球联赛的赛事分为省赛、大区赛（赛区）、二十四强赛和总决赛三个部分，三个阶段环环相扣，逐一递进。
Not to mention Sun Yat-sen University Men's Volleyball Team had failed to get a satisfactory result in previous years. What’s worse, the team encountered several strong opponents and went through numerous hard battles before entering 2023-2024 China University Volleyball League (High Level Group) Finals. Luckily, Sun Yat-sen University Men's Volleyball Team turned danger into safety under great pressure time and again, and finally advanced to the 2023-2024 CUVA finals successfully.
更不必说中山大学男子排球队在前些年的比赛中遗憾败北，而在今年的CUVA比赛中，中大男排也频频遇上强敌，在参加今年的CUVA总决赛之前就已经遭遇了多场鏖战。万幸的是，球队还是顶住了压力，一次次化险为夷，顺利晋级2023-2024年CUVA总决赛。
However, the stress was increasing. Sun Yat-sen University Men's Volleyball Team would face another old rival Fudan University Men's Volleyball Team after getting a ticket to the 2023-2024 CUVA finals. And unfortunately, Sun Yat-sen University Men’s Volleyball Team narrowly lost to Fudan University Men’s Volleyball Team by 14:16, with the big score of 2:3, after a controversial decision in the first game of the finals.
然而，压力不减反增。拿到2023-2024年CUVA总决赛的入场券后，中山大学男子排球队（高水平组）即将迎战的是老对手复旦大学男子排球队（高水平组）。遗憾的是，总决赛第一场中，中大男排在决胜局经历了争议判罚之后，以14:16惜败，大比分2:3先输一场。
Fortunately, after several key adjustments, Sun Yat-sen University men’s volleyball team gradually figured out the tricks behind opponent's attack and defense, successfully dominating the rhythm of the court. At the end of the first set, No. 4 player Kao Xin helped the team win the first set at 25:23 by serving an ace and reception attack.
所幸经过几次关键的调整，中大男排在拉锯中逐渐摸清了对手攻防的套路，场上节奏逐渐被中大男排主导。第一局末，4号考鑫用发球和一攻连下三分帮助中大男排以25：23拿下首局。
Then came the second set of the match, Sun Yat-sen University men's volleyball team took the lead thanks to team member Shi Lei's outstanding serving ability and the orderly cooperation of the whole team. Then the two main attackers Chen Huake and Jia Yuchen scored the points consecutively with the assistance of setter Song Chenyang. Sun Yat-sen University men's volleyball team won the second set with a big score of 25:16.
比赛进入第二局，中大男排凭借施磊出色的发球能力与队伍有条不紊的配合打开局面。随后二传宋晨阳用组织调动帮助两位主攻手陈化珂与贾宇琛连续得分。中大男排以25：16的比分拿下第二局。
In the third set, facing the win-or-go-home situation, Fudan University men's volleyball team adopted a more aggressive tactic to score in succession. While Sun Yat-sen University men's volleyball team grabbed the score by playing steadily. At the critical moment, Chen Huake’s excellent serve completely changed the situation on the court. At the end of the match, Fudan University men's volleyball team’s spiking ball changed direction on the net belt. Jia Yuchen and Song Chenyang continuously saved the ball back to the field, but the ball ended up being somewhere hard to attack. Without hesitation, Chen Huake jumped from the back court and hit an impeccable back triple buckle. With the big score of 25:21, Sun Yat-sen University men's volleyball team eventually lifted the trophy of the CUVA Finals!
第三局比赛，背水一战的复旦男排采取较为激进的战术连连得分，中大男排则通过稳扎稳打的球风咬住比分。关键时刻，陈化珂出色的发球彻底扭转场上局势。比赛尾声，复旦男排的扣球在网带上发生变向，贾宇琛与宋晨阳连续扑救接力将球救回场中，但球的位置不利于进攻。陈化珂没有犹豫，从后场起跳，打出一记无可挑剔的后三重扣。25:21！中大男排捧起本次CUVA总决赛的冠军奖杯！

On June 8th, 2024, Sun Yat-sen University Men's Volleyball Team (High-level Group) won the championship in 2023-2024 China University Volleyball League (High Level Group) Finals. Colorful ribbons and warm applause filled the whole gym. When the camera swept across the big screen, the high spirits and vigor of Sun Yat-sen University athletes was brought into live. They stood side by side, chin up and chest out, bright smiles spreading across their faces. This unforgettable moment filled people’s heart with excitement, pride, and warmth.
2024年6月8日，中山大学男子排球队（高水平组）在2023-2024年中国大学排球联赛（高水平组）总决赛中获得冠军！体育馆内，漫天彩带飞舞，热烈掌声环绕。摄像机扫过大屏幕，定格中山大学体育健将们的意气风发。他们并肩而立，昂首挺胸，脸上洋溢着灿烂的笑容。这一刻，让人自豪，让人动容，让人永远铭记。

What support them to present a touching chapter of the “dance” under great pressure? The answer is pure love for school.
是什么支撑着他们谱写在重压下“起舞”的动人篇章的呢？答案，不言自明。
The year 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Sun Yat-sen University. With the pure and firm determination to win honor for the school, every member of Sun Yat-sen University men's volleyball team (high-level group) recharged their batteries and brought out the best in each other.
2024年是中山大学建校一百周年。带着为学校争光的坚定信念和纯粹决心，中山大学男子排球队（高水平组）的每一位队员都做好了充足的准备，拿出自己最好的状态。
Every time they encountered strong opponents, every time they got into hard battles, they reminded themselves of the pure aspiration for winning honor for their school. One of the members said in the interview, “There’s nothing but the burning desire to show the grit of our school in my mind when I stepped onto the field.”
每当遇到劲敌，每当陷入鏖战，中大男排都不忘为校争光的纯粹渴望。其中一名队员表示：“每当我踏入赛场，脑海中的唯一念头就是打出学校的气势来。”
Pure love for school, becomes an inexhaustible source of strength under pressure.

Women’s Volleyball Team from School of Government: Love Echoes When Pulling Through Together
政务女排的“逸仙杯”逐梦之行：
齐心渡难关，热爱有回声
The story between women’s volleyball team from School of Government and “Yixian Cup” Campus Volleyball Games, is not only a chapter of pure passion under various challenges and great pressure, but also a vivid portrayal of the volleyball culture at Sun Yat-sen University.
中山大学政务院女子排球队与“逸仙杯”校园排球赛的故事，是以纯粹热爱与激情，在重重挑战与压力之下昂首向前的故事，也是是中大排球文化的又一生动写照。

At that time, Wang Yidi, a junior from School of Government, successfully established the women’s volleyball team of School of Government out of her love for volleyball, with the guidance and support of counselors, school leaders and volleyball association. However, challenges followed.
王怡迪同学是中山大学政治与公共事务管理学院2022级本科生。当时，她怀抱着对排球的热爱，在辅导员、院领导和排球协会的指导与支持下，顺利成立了政务女排。然而，挑战接踵而至。
The uneven strengths and styles of the players was the first difficulty faced by this new team. The players had different volleyball bases, different progress rates, and different personalities, which required Wang Yidi to consider the overall progress and training time of the team during daily training.
队员风格实力参差不齐是这支队伍组建之初所面临的第一道难关。由于队员们的排球基础不同、进步速度不同、性格存在差异，身为队长的王怡迪就需要在日常训练时考虑球队的整体进度和训练时间。
Worse still, given that the changing conditions of the field and the different styles of the opponents Wang Yidi had no alternative but to plan tactics, adjust the team status and coordinate the game time in time... The heavy work and the expectation of results put her under strong psychological pressure time after time.
雪上加霜的是，比赛场上多变的状况、对手捉摸不定的球风，又使得王怡迪需要得及时规划战术、调整球队状态并协调比赛时间……繁重的工作和对结果的期待常常使她面临着强大的心理压力。
Fortunately, surrounded by senior schoolmates, teammates and friends who share the pure love and passion for volleyball with her, Yidi was not alone. Like-minded teammates took an active part in training and cooperation. The whole team made progress firmly and collectively.
幸运的是，怡迪并非孤军奋战，她身边是和她同样怀揣着纯粹热爱与激情的师兄师姐、队友和朋友们。志同道合的小伙伴们积极配合、认真训练，整个球队坚定而团结地进步。
In one game of 2024 “Yixian Cup” Campus Volleyball Games, the women’s volleyball team of School of Government fell behind in the early stage. It seemed that they couldn’t perform their due level no matter how hard they try. Luckily, no one was discouraged. They hearkened to their leader’s tactical arrangements carefully, cooperated actively and encouraged each other warmly. Every jump and hit together formed a pair of invisible hands on the court, reversing the situation on the court step by step. Eventually the women’s volleyball team of School of Government won the game together.
在“逸仙杯”校园排球比赛的一场比赛中，政务女排在前期比分落后，似乎怎么打都不顺手。但没有人气馁，而是认真听取队长的战术安排，密切合作、相互打气。一次次不服输的跳跃和击球似乎在赛场上凝聚出了一双无形的手，一点点扭转着场上的局面，最终球队合力拿下了比赛胜利。
From falling behind to catching up, and from catching up to exceeding, they spared no efforts to win every ball and every point. Upon hearing the delightful news of their victory, the girls hugged each other tightly. Day and night, they trained under pressure, soaked in sweat, moving forward with pure love. The victory of the “Yixian Cup” Campus Volleyball Game was the best affirmation of their pure passion under the pressure.
从落后到追平，从追平到超越，每一球都拼尽全力，每一分都来之不易。得知获胜喜讯的那一刻，姑娘们紧紧相拥。多少个日日夜夜，她们顶住压力，挥洒汗水，以纯粹的热爱昂首向前。“逸仙杯”校园排球赛的胜利，是对她们重压之下纯粹前行的最佳肯定。
Just as Wang Yidi said when asked about what supported her through this journey, “To be honest, I have long forgotten the moment when I first fell in love with volleyball, but I am truly convinced that my love for volleyball would last forever.”
正如王怡迪同学在被问及是什么支撑着她走过这段旅程时所说：“实际上，我早已忘记了喜欢上排球的那个瞬间，但我确信的是，我的热爱却可以延绵不绝。”
Pure passion for dreams, becomes the strong support under pressure.
对梦想的纯粹热爱，成为重压之下的有力支柱。
It is definitely worthy and honorable to walk under great pressure. What is the strength that supports them all the way? The answer is purity. Purity is a valuable quality in competitive sports. It is the pure love, for dream, for school, and for the country that support the athletes and sports fans in Sun Yat-sen University to move forward steadily and farther.
重压之下前行，可贵且可敬。是什么支撑着他们呢？答案，是纯粹。在竞技体育中，纯粹更是一种难能可贵的品质。纯粹的爱，为梦，为校，为国，支撑着中山大学的运动员们和体育爱好者们，走得更稳、更远。
