Longquan Wangou Art Museum



上午10:00,我们在龙泉望瓯·美术馆见到了策展人万里雅先生。可能因为早年航海经历的缘故,万里雅总给人一种坚定、硬朗、果敢的感觉。


At 10:00 a.m., we met the curator Mr. Wan Liya in Longquan Wangou-Art Museum. Mr. Wan always gives people a firm, hard and bold feeling, probably because of his early years of sailing experience.


作为较早开始现当代陶瓷艺术创作的中国艺术家之一,万里雅几乎亲历了中国陶瓷艺术三十多年来的现代性进程。他的作品一直在中国传统陶瓷技艺与现当代议题的表达中寻找关联与线索。作品被包括大英博物馆在内的多家美术馆、博物馆等公共机构和个人收藏。


As one of the earliest Chinese artists who started to create contemporary ceramic art, Mr. Wan has almost experienced the modernization process of Chinese ceramic art for more than thirty years. His works have been searching for connections and clues between traditional Chinese ceramic techniques and the expression of contemporary issues. His works are in the collections of many art galleries, museums and other public institutions, including the British Museum, as well as individual collections.


作为现任国际陶艺学会(IAC)理事、中国区代表,他为中外陶瓷艺术的交流做出了许多重要的贡献,本次访谈我们很荣幸邀请到他来聊聊这次展览的主题和意义,以及他希望通过望瓯·艺术中心的国际化青瓷驻地项目和“厚德秉贞”展览为龙泉这座城市带来什么?


As the current director of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC) and representative of China, he has made many important contributions to the exchange of ceramic art between China and abroad. We are honored to invite him to talk about the theme and significance of this exhibition and what he hopes to bring to the city of Longquan through the international celadon residency program at the Wangou Art Center and the exhibition "Celadon Virtuous". What does he hope to bring to Longquan city through the internationalized celadon residency program of Wangou Art Center and the exhibition "Celadon Virtuous"?

Q:

此次展览以“厚德秉贞”为题,能否请您详尽阐述策划此次展览的初衷和选择展览主题的意义?

This exhibition is titled "Celadon Virtuous", could you elaborate on the original intention of this exhibition and the significance of choosing the theme?


A: 我选择“厚德秉贞”为主题有两方面的考虑:一是青瓷温润如玉的材料和釉色所具有的独特表现力,与中国传统审美相契合,且经常被人们与道德情操和人格魅力联系起来。在今天,艺术家还可以运用这种独特魅力和个人的工作方式做出怎样的表达?另一方面,也是希望通过这次驻地艺术家针对青瓷的集中创作,能够提倡一种朴素沉稳的工作状态、严谨平和的工作态度。这也是我希望这次活动所能成就的现实意义。


The choice of "Celadon Virtuous" as the theme is based on two considerations: firstly, the unique expressive power of celadon's jade-like material and glaze is compatible with traditional Chinese aesthetics, and it is a symbol of the morality and charisma of the traditional literati. In today's world, artists can use this unique charisma and personal working style to make personalized expression. On the other hand, it is hoped that through this resident artist's concentrated creation for celadon, a simple and calm working condition and a rigorous and peaceful working attitude will be advocated, which is the practical significance that this activity can accomplish.

Q:

在甄选参展艺术家时,您遵循了哪些准则与考量?

What criteria and considerations do you follow when selecting artists for the exhibition?




A: 所邀请驻场的艺术家,无论是在作品风格还是工作方法上,都有显著的个人特征。所以,我希望能够以多元的角度对青瓷的制作工艺、表现力和艺术表达方式等方面做出尽可能多的尝试。某种程度上说,这些艺术家也是契合“厚德秉贞”这个主题。


The choice of "Celadon Virtuous" as the theme is based on two considerations: firstly, the unique expressive power of celadon's jade-like material and glaze color is compatible with traditional Chinese aesthetics. It is often associated with morality and charisma. What kind of expression can artists still make today by utilizing this unique charisma and personal way of working? On the other hand, it is also hoped that by focusing on celadon, the resident artists can promote a simple and calm working condition. I also hope that this event will contribute to the development of a simple and calm working condition, and a rigorous and peaceful working attitude. It is also hoped that this activity can realize the practical significance.

长期以来,您始终致力于从不同角度探索陶瓷艺术与当代文化的融合。能否请您分享策划此次展览的心路历程和愿景?

For a long time, you have been committed to exploring the fusion of ceramic art and contemporary culture from different perspectives. Could you share your journey and vision in curating this exhibition?

A: 迄今为止,我从事陶瓷工作三十五年。亲历了这期间中国陶瓷艺术的发展变化。个人觉得,目前中国陶瓷艺术正处在一个重要的历史阶段。一方面,整体上说,中国从现当代陶瓷艺术发生到发展历经四五十年,已经形成相对完整的整体面貌和内在发展理路。另一方面,随着越来越多的艺术院校增设了陶艺专业或者陶艺工作室,中国已经形成庞大的陶瓷艺术相关从业群体。各个陶瓷产区,类似陶溪川的陶瓷文化创意园区的不断出现,对中国陶瓷艺术的发展,产生了重要而深远的影响。


So far, I have been engaged in ceramics for thirty-five years,  personally experienced the development of Chinese ceramic art during this period of change. Personally feel that the Chinese ceramic art is in an important historical stage: On the one hand, totally, China's contemporary ceramic art from the occurrence of the development of four or five decades, it has formed a relatively complete overall appearance and internal development clues. On the other hand, with more and more art colleges and universities set up ceramic art majors or ceramic art studio, China has formed a large group of ceramic art related practitioners. The emergence of ceramic cultural and creative parks similar to Taoxichuan in various ceramic production areas has had an important and far-reaching impact on the development of Chinese ceramic art. 


近一两年,全国各地出现了许多陶瓷艺术双年展,陶瓷艺术竞赛等等活动。今年更是集中爆发。具不完全统计,仅10月份,全国至少举办具有相当规模的大型陶瓷艺术展览和相关活动20个以上。每一个单独的活动都与整个陶瓷艺术界息息相关。在中国陶瓷艺术整体呈现空前繁荣的状况下,如何从更开阔的视野,和理性的心态看待这种繁荣?如何以有效方式,维护和保持这种繁荣的稳定和可持续发展?这需要整个陶瓷艺术界共同努力。


In the past year or two, there are many ceramic art biennials, ceramic art competitions and other activities around the country. This year is more concentrated outbreak. In October alone, incomplete statistics, the country has at least 20 or more, with a considerable scale of large-scale ceramic art exhibition and related activities. Each individual activity is closely related to the entire ceramic art world. In China's ceramic art as a whole presents unprecedented prosperity, how to view this prosperity from a broader perspective, and rational mindset? How to maintain and keep this prosperity in an effective way, stability and sustainable development? Need the entire ceramic art community to work together.

您期望此次展览的空间布局能够展现出怎样的效果?

How do you expect the spatial layout of the exhibition to present?

A: 尽可能完整清晰地呈现“厚德秉贞”的主题概念和青瓷的独特表现力,并充分展示每个艺术家的个体特征和作品信息。


To present the theme concept of "Celadon Virtuous" and the unique expressive power of celadon as completely and clearly as possible. Each artist's individual characteristics and information about his/her work will be fully displayed.



Q:

您认为举办此次展览对于推动艺术与文化交流具有怎样的意义?

What do you think is the significance of organizing this exhibition to promote art and cultural communication?

A: 我并没有那么大的奢望,也没有那么大的能力通过一次展览,就能起到推动艺术和文化交流的作用。如果这个展览,在当下繁荣热闹的陶瓷艺术界,在未来中国陶艺发展过程中,能够成为一个有明确针对性和参考价值的案例,我的工作就及格了。


I don't have such a big expectation or ability to promote art and cultural exchange through one exhibition. If this exhibition, in the present, prosperous and lively ceramic art world, in the future development process of Chinese ceramics, can become a clearer, targeted and reference value of the case, it's enough.

您觉得此次展览可能会对龙泉青年及其他群体(在地青瓷手艺人、驻地手艺人、陶瓷艺术爱好者、学术行业从业者等)产生什么影响?

What impact do you think this exhibition might have on Longquan youth and other groups (local celadon artisans, resident artisans, ceramic art enthusiasts, academic industry practitioners, etc.)?

A: 对于龙泉青年及其他群体(在地青瓷手艺人、驻地手艺人、陶瓷艺术爱好者、学术行业从业者等)来说,能够给他们带来新鲜感,从而引发他们换一个视角去审视他们所熟悉的深厚传统。引发他们去深入探究不同的思维和技法的兴趣,是我希望这个展览能够达到的效果。还有就是在整个驻场创作期间,中外艺术家通过与本土艺术家和在地手艺人的交流收获颇丰。


For Longquan youth and other groups (local celadon artisans, resident artisans, ceramic art enthusiasts, practitioners in the academic industry, etc.), it can bring a sense of freshness, thus provoking them to look at the deep traditions they are familiar with from a different perspective. It is my hope that this exhibition can achieve this goal. This is the effect I hope this exhibition can achieve. Also, during the entire residency period, both Chinese and foreign artists have gained a great deal from the exchanges with local artists and craftsmen in the region. Both Chinese and foreign artists have gained a lot from the exchange with local artists and local craftsmen during the residency.

万里雅 ,1963年生于山东青岛。1988年毕业于青岛远洋船员学院,2009-2010中央美院壁画系高研班,陶瓷领域艺术家,现任国际陶艺学会IAC理事—中国区代表(国际陶艺学会IAC,是联合国教科文组织文化合作机构)。客座执教青岛电影学院,美国西北大学、密西根大学。


Wan Liya, born in 1963 in Qingdao, Shandong Province, graduated from Qingdao Ocean Crew College in 1988, 2009-2010 Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) Mural Painting Department Advanced Study Program, ceramics artist, is currently the director of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC) - representative of China. Guest lecturer at Qingdao Film Academy, Northwestern University, University of Michigan, USA.
