本周我们来学习与权力相关的词汇


1. reciprocity /ˌresɪ'prɒsɪtɪ/

a situation or relationship in which two people or groups agree to do something similar for each other, to allow each other to have the same rights, etc. n. 互惠;互换

e.g. Kindness often leads to reciprocity—when you help someone, they’re more likely to help you in return.

e.g. In relationships, reciprocity is key; both people should give and receive equally to maintain balance.


v. reciprocate 报答;回报;[感情上]的回应

e.g. It broke his heart to learn that his love was not reciprocated. 

e.g. When someone shows kindness, it’s important to reciprocate and show gratitude in return.


2. neglect /nɪ'glekt/

v. 不予重视;忽视

搭配 feel neglected 感觉被忽视

e.g. Parents should never neglect their children’s emotional needs, as it can impact their development.

e.g. Employees may feel neglected if their efforts are not recognized or appreciated. especially when they work overtime or take on extra responsibilities without acknowledgment from their managers.


n. 忽视;疏忽

补充:neglect of duty 玩忽职守

e.g. Neglect of emotional well-being can harm a person’s mental health over time.

e.g. The nurse was accused of neglect of duty for not attending to a critical patient in time.


3. estrange /ɪ'streɪn(d)ʒ/

v. 离间;使疏远

搭配:be/ feel estranged from 疏远;远离

e.g. Although he was estranged from his brother for years, they eventually reconciled.

e.g. He felt deeply estranged from the society he lived in. 

补充:reconcile v. 和好;和解


n. estrangement 疏远;疏远期;分居期

e.g. Years of estrangement from her parents left her feeling isolated.

e.g. His estrangement from his family was deeply painful.


4. drift apart

[phrasal verb] 关系渐渐疏远

e.g. They used to be great friends, but they've gradually drifted apart over the years.

e.g. Over the years my college friends and I have drifted apart.


近义补充:

go sperate ways

e.g. After university, we went our separate ways and started new lives.


5. trustworthy /'trʌs(t)wɜːðɪ/

adj. 可信赖的;可靠的

e.g. He is a trustworthy and level-headed leader.

e.g. Many people do not see politicians as entirely trustworthy.

补充:level-headed 冷静的


antonym: untrustworthy/ unreliable 不可信的;不可靠的

e.g. He is notoriously unreliable/ untrustworthy and often turns up late for work.
