Bio-inspired Underwater Robots
期刊:npj Roboticsx
客座编辑:Liang Li, Wei Wang & Nicole W. Xu
Bio-inspired underwater robots are engineered to replicate the morphology, movements, and behaviors of aquatic animals, which have evolved amazingly underwater mobility. This interdisciplinary field of research combines principles from biology, engineering, computer science, fluid dynamics, and robotics to develop efficient and adaptable underwater vehicles. Researchers have created various designs inspired by aquatic organisms such as fish, dolphins, and jellyfish. These bio-inspired robots are employed in a range of applications, including ocean exploration, environmental monitoring, and search and rescue operations. Their capability to navigate complex marine environments makes them invaluable tools for both researchers and industry professionals.

The superconducting diode effect
期刊:Communications Physics
客座编辑:Mazhar Ali, Akito Daido & Yaojia Wang
This Focus Collection aims to provide a platform to showcase and discuss the fundamental physics and current theoretical understanding of the superconducting diode effect and other nonreciprocal phenomena in superconductors. It will also include work reporting the different experimental platforms, such as Josephson junctions, superconducting heterostructures, thin films, tunnelling junctions and twisted bilayer systems, that have been used to realise and investigate the superconducting diode effect so far. The Focus Collection will also consider research that discusses how the superconducting diode could eventually become an alternative platform to semiconducting components but also the relevance to related fields such as superconducting spintronics and quantum information.

Dietary restriction and health
期刊:Scientific Reports
客座编辑:Yongting Luo, Edyta Łuszczki, Antonio Paoli, Mikiko Watanabe & Falak Zeb
Limiting food consumption, or the timing of food consumption, has been shown to have beneficial effects across a wide range of species, including yeast, worms, flies, rodents, non-human primates, and humans. Approaches to dietary restriction include the limitation of total caloric intake; the limitation of specific nutrients, particularly protein or select amino acids; or the temporal restriction of food intake, also known as intermittent fasting. In mammals, dietary restriction can increase healthspan and lifespan by protecting against ageing-related disorders such as cancer, neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, and metabolic diseases, and inflammation. The mechanisms underlying such effects include reduced insulin/IGF1 and mTORC1 signaling, reduced protein synthesis, reduced oxidative stress, and the activation of geroprotective sirtuins. Individuals can vary widely in their responses to various dietary restriction regimens, however, posing a challenge for translating these approaches to the clinic. This Collection welcomes original research on all aspects of dietary restriction, including the molecular pathways involved, the resulting health outcomes, and the factors affecting its efficacy.

Peatlands and wetlands
期刊:Nature Communications等
编辑团队请参考特刊主页
Peatlands and wetlands, such as freshwater bogs and salt marshes, are permanently waterlogged ecosystems that form a vital and vast carbon store. Land use change, drainage and climate change, among other factors, can lead to their degradation. Degradation, in turn, can release carbon to the atmosphere. On the other hand, conservation and restoration of these important ecosystems could help achieve climate targets. In this Collection, we present articles that explore how climate change and land use are affecting peatlands and wetlands, their extent and their biogeochemical cycles. We welcome submissions of complementary studies and opinion pieces that can help broaden the discussion and further our understanding of peatlands and wetlands and their role in the global carbon cycle.

Precision gene editing
期刊:Communications Biology等
客座编辑:Mo Li & Leena Tripathi
With this cross-journal Collection, we invite studies that investigate the mechanisms of precision gene editing, the exploration of genome editing technologies to understand mechanisms of disease and regeneration and potential applications of precision gene editing to the fields of agriculture, bioengineering and precision medicine. We are also interested in significant methodological advances in this exciting field.

Divisive politics, polarisation and democratic decline
期刊:Humanities and Social Sciences Communications
编辑团队请参考特刊主页
Many countries are grappling with the difficulties posed by the division of their societies into mutually distrustful camps in which political identity defines social identity. Such increased polarisation and tribalism results in a narrowing of the space for consensus building and mutual understanding, as inter-group conflicts come to dominate social and political discourse. Ultimately, such an environment risks eroding social cohesion and accelerating democratic erosion. This collection sets out to take a holistic view of what has been termed ‘nasty politics’—that is, politics characterised by populist, divisive, or contentious rhetoric that entrenches ‘us’/‘them’ narratives—and its implications for society and democracy.

Artificial intelligence for multimodal biomedical imaging
期刊:Communications Engineering
客座编辑:Geng-Shi Jeng, Annalisa Occhipinti & Or Perlman
Artificial intelligence is being increasingly used to boost the performance of multimodal biomedical imaging. The capabilities of AI are helpful for the design of the imaging systems which capture information in different modalities; and for image post-processing, which harnesses the strength of several physical phenomena simultaneously. These techniques include optical coherence tomography, which reveals tissue morphology in real-time, and optoacoustic imaging, which visualizes tissue structures and molecular targets. Integrating different imaging modalities with advanced AI strategies has created new opportunities for outperforming the state of the pathology-identification tasks and novel applications such as cross-domain translation.

Social robots and human-computer interaction
期刊:Scientific Reports
客座编辑:Kun Chang Lee, Antonella Marchetti, Alessia Saggese & Hsiu-Ping Yueh
Social robots are designed to interact with humans in a meaningful manner and play an increasing role within the field of human-computer interaction. They have several potential societal applications, including serving as companions for the elderly and individuals in need, facilitating education, and supporting psychological interventions. As social robots enter more public and private domains, it becomes increasingly more important to investigate the factors that influence their acceptance and trust (or lack thereof) to improve the dynamics of human-computer interaction. This Collection welcomes original research articles investigating the different roles of social robots, the nature of their interactions with humans, and the psychosocial determinants of their acceptance and trust.
