Greater Bay Area Science Forum explores low-altitude economy, ocean science, and energy storage

On November 18th, the 2024 Greater Bay Area Science Forum gathered experts and scholars to exchange ideas on cutting-edge topics, including the low-altitude economy, ocean science, and energy storage technologies, aiming to explore new directions for technological innovation and industrial development.

"Low-altitude economy is a double-edged sword," noted Chen Zhijie, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, during the low-altitude economy subforum. He emphasized that developing the low-altitude economy hinges on establishing a robust safety system. "Cooperative low-altitude flight safety can be improved through mandatory standards that enhance automatic identification and proactive prevention capabilities. However, managing non-cooperative risks is more challenging and requires better monitoring and identification capabilities," he said. Chen proposed formulating safety standards for low-altitude aircraft from the perspectives of management, manufacturing, and operations while innovating management and intelligent control technologies for low-altitude scenarios.

Zhang Hong, Vice President of EHang Intelligent Equipment, noted, "The state has allocated dimensional land resources, and governments at all levels should construct new economic patterns based on these resources. The economic value brought by the low-altitude economy encompasses several aspects, including economic growth, industrial integration, and infrastructure development." He identified electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft as a core application of the low-altitude economy. He also noted that the global market is rapidly expanding and predicted that China would account for 50% of the future market share.

During the ocean science subforum, Li Jiabiao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering stated,"Land-based resources are becoming increasingly scarce, making the ocean an important alternative." Citing World Bank data, he noted that achieving global temperature control within a 2°C increase by 2050 would require over a 500% increase in the demand for strategic metals like nickel and lithium. He further emphasized,"Clean energy comes with no free lunch. Deep-sea ecosystems recover extremely slowly; once damaged, it takes five to ten years for recovery." He also introduced the "Digital Deep-sea Typical Habitats Programme", an international big science research plan, which leverages digital technologies to effectively predict and protect deep-sea ecosystems.

Hydrogen energy took center stage at the advanced energy technologies subforum. Fu Honggang, a professor at Heilongjiang University, observed,"While hydrogen energy accounted for less than 0.1% of global energy demand in 2020, it is projected to exceed 12% by 2050." He emphasized that with 99% of hydrogen currently derived from fossil fuel reforming, achieving green hydrogen production is critical. Li Haiwen, a professor at Sun Yat-sen University, added that safe and efficient hydrogen storage and transportation technologies are essential for scaling up the hydrogen industry and supporting carbon neutrality goals.
