Jinan has long been known for its "springs in every home, weeping willows by every door," and Qushuiting Street is where this charm is most vividly displayed. The street is named after the pavilion, which owes its existence to the water, and the water is celebrated for its sinuous and winding course. On Qushuiting Street, you can both seek out the landscapes of the past, partake in the ancient scholars' delight of 'flowing cup' along the meandering stream, and also feel the pulse of modern commerce, savor the smoky aroma of everyday life. The ancient and the contemporary, tranquility and vitality, are folded and merged within this old street. It's a place where history and progress, peace and energy, intertwine in a tapestry of time.

Hey guys, I’m walking here at Qushuiting street. Today I’m here at a great scholar in China, Mr. Lu Dahuang’s former residence.Let's follow hisfootsteps and feel his unusual life experience and contributions!

At the beginning of 1938, during the war, a middle-aged man burdened with a humble cloth bundle on his back, made his arduous journey from rural Zichuan to Jinan. He hid his identity and settled down by Daming Lake. This man was none other than Lu Dahuang, hailed as the "Pioneering Scholar of Pu Studies" in China.

Unswervingly dedicated, he became a pioneer in the study of Liao Zhai

Born in the hometown of Pu Songling, Mr. Lu Dahuang was an outstanding pioneer in the study of Liao Zhai. The Complete Works of Liao Zhai he edited provided an important documentary foundation for subsequent studies on Pu Songling; The Complete Works of Pu Songlinghe compiled gathered the essence of Liao Zhai's manuscripts, laying the foundation for Pu Songling studies both domestically and internationally, and enriching the literary treasury of China and the world.

"A winding stream connects the well, twenty years of dedication to the Liao Zhai." As the couplet on both sides of the gate of his former residence says, Mr. Lu Dahuang dedicated his life to the collection, organization, research, and editing of Pu Songling's works. Despite many setbacks, he remained steadfast and ultimately became a great cultural figure, leaving a significant mark in the annals of human cultural history.

Chivalrous and righteous, he dedicated all to safeguard the cultural veins of the nation

"The responsibility of preserving cultural heritage is heavier than guarding the land itself." In the eyes of Mr. Lu Dahuang, safeguarding manuscripts was akin to guarding the nation’s cultural lifelines, as important as soldiers defending the territory. In the era of war and chaos, he employed the method of "hiding books in the wall," concealing precious manuscripts of Pu Songlingand living in seclusion in the old streets of Jinan’s Mingfu City. In 1963, at the age of 67, Lu Dahuang donated the long-cherished Liao Zhai Manuscriptsto the Shandong Provincial Library, where they became the treasure of the collections.

Though the man has passed, his legacy endures

With grey bricks, tiles and the tranquil courtyard. Today's Lu Dahuang's former residence still maintains a simple style, much like the man himself. Standing quietly, one can almost see his figure, working through the night, diligently studying Pu Songling's works. Many visitors come to this place, seeking the traces of his life, and paying homage to the steadfast and rigorous demeanor of a true scholar.

"Ancient pavilion stands in Shandong Peninsula, Jinan abounds with men of fame." The virtuous and the ambitious have taken it upon themselves to safeguard the light of Chinese civilization, preserving many precious manuscripts and books amidst the chaos of war. Today, as we have the fortune to peruse these ancient texts, we must remember their contributions and sacrifices!
