Food waste management strategies

图片

期刊:npj Sustainable Agriculture

客座编辑:Ke Yin

Cradle-to-grave greenhouse gas emissions within the global food systems are responsible for nearly half of all emissions. Alarmingly, a significant portion of these emissions is linked to avoidable food waste. Customer negligence and unequal technological development exacerbate this issue. While one billion people struggle to secure their next meal, one-third to half of the food from global dining tables ends up in landfills daily. This wastage, often caused by disconnects in post-farming stages and delayed logistics, results in the loss of up to one-third or even half of food commodities throughout the food supply chain. In the face of this tremendous waste, it becomes imperative to minimize its negative impacts during the food waste management stage. Regrettably, food waste management strategies face numerous challenges.

Maternal-infant microbiome

The maternal-infant microbiome relationship represents a crucial area of research with profound implications for both maternal and neonatal health. Studies indicate that during pregnancy, the maternal microbiome undergoes dynamic changes, influenced by various factors like diet, environment, and hormonal fluctuations. This microbial community plays a pivotal role in shaping the infant's microbiome, acquired primarily during birth and through breastfeeding. Research highlights the significance of this transmission in seeding the infant's gut with beneficial bacteria, crucial for immune system development and overall health. Current questions aim to elucidate the intricate mechanisms governing the intergenerational microbial transfer and its implications for long-term health outcomes in both mothers and infants.

Metamaterials

Metamaterials are artificial materials which have widely attracted research attention due to their ability of delivering unique features, and are expected to be critical in the field of photonics as well as mechanics. By artificially creating subwavelength patterned structures, optical metamaterials allow to control and manipulate light; potential applications in which these types of structure can be paramount are metalenses and cloaking devices. By engineering micron to submicron structures, mechanical metamaterials instead exhibit exceptional responses to applied forces; these can be essential for example to create solids that have behave like liquids and ultralight, low-density materials with extraordinary strength.

From spinouts to multinationals, here we celebrate the industrial innovation and industry-academia collaborations that enrich the pages of Communications Engineering. Research presented here has at least one author with their primary affiliation as a commercial enterprise.  We are now formally welcoming contributions which satisfy this criterion in an official call for papers.

Nature Portfolio is launching a new open Collection to call for submissions on immune aging, and encourages submissions of primary research studying related topics, including but not limited to cellular and molecular, mechanistic analyses using animal, human or non-human primate models. We welcome new insights on both of the innate and adaptive immune systems, as well as their crosstalk in relevant settings. In parallel, we are also interested in under-represented groups or cohorts even with exploratory outcomes, and appreciate broad contexts such as infection, cancer and autoimmunity. Finally, we may consider Review articles but primary research will be the main priority in this Collection.

Radio astronomy has changed how we view the universe, with radio telescopes allowing the retrieval of information beyond visible light by observing radio waves emitted from various astronomical sources. This collection features research highlights and technical developments in radio astronomy on topics such as radio observations of the Sun, planets, fast radio bursts, galactic center, cosmic microwave background, pulsars, active galactic nuclei, as well as instrumentation enabling these observations such as radio telescope architectures, advanced receiver system components, calibration methods, and imaging techniques.

Complex systems are a class of systems composed of multiple elements interacting in a nonsimple way such that collective behaviors emerge. These systems can be of various natures: biological (e.g., ecosystems, microbiomes, brains), technological (e.g., the Internet, power grids), or social (e.g., contact/social networks). Their emergent behaviors are equally diverse: the stability of ecosystems under external perturbations, the flocking behavior of birds, the cognitive functions of the brain, and the susceptibility of a population to sustain an epidemic of an infectious disease.

Viral hepatitis

Viral hepatitis is an infection of the liver with one of five strains of the hepatitis virus (A, B, C, D, or E), resulting in liver inflammation and damage. Hepatitis B and C, in particular, lead to chronic disease, including cirrhosis and cancer, and affect over 350 million people worldwide, with the greatest burden amongst low- and middle-income countries and marginalised communities. The World Health Organization has set out the ambitious aim to eliminate viral hepatitis globally by 2030. Viral hepatitis is largely preventable and can be treated, though there are inequities in access to vaccines, diagnostics, and treatments, and most people living with hepatitis are unaware that they have it.
