历史上，老子比孔子年长20岁至30岁左右，祖上是周朝史官世家，他后来曾长时间担任周朝洛阳守藏室官吏，相当于现在的国家图书馆馆长，因此学问渊博，观点深厚且独特。
In history, Laozi was about 20 to 30 years older than Confucius. He was from a family of historians in the Zhou Dynasty and later served as a custodian of the archives in Luoyang during the Zhou Dynasty, equivalent to the present-day director of a national library. Therefore, Laozi was knowledgeable, and had profound and unique perspectives.
孔子知道老子是一位极有学问的长者，便来到洛阳向老子求教礼仪等方面的知识。如果还原孔子与老子见面时的场景，可见两个人接触时间并不算长，交流的内容也不算多，但孔子却感觉到了老子的高深莫测。
Confucius, aware of Laozi's extensive knowledge, went to Luoyang to seek guidance on matters such as etiquette. If we were to recreate the scene where Confucius met Laozi, it is evident that their interaction was not lengthy, and the content of their exchange was not extensive. However, Confucius felt the profound and unfathomable wisdom of Laozi.
孔子的弟子见到老师回来，就关切地询问老子是位什么样的人。孔子感慨万千地说：鸟虽能飞，鱼虽能游，兽虽能跑，我都可以用网将他们捉住。至于龙，它能乘云而上九天，我就没办法对付它了。老子他真像一条龙啊！
Upon returning, Confucius' disciples eagerly inquired about the kind of person Laozi was. Confucius, filled with emotions, said, "Birds may fly, fish may swim, beasts may run, and I can capture them all with a net. But as for the dragon, which can ascend to the clouds and reach the ninth heaven, I have no means to deal with it. Laozi is truly like a dragon!"
