The Origin of the Chongyang Festival

On the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, comes a traditional Chinese festival: Chongyang, the Double Ninth Festival.

In the Book of Changes, “nine” is believed to be a Yang number, and there are two nines on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. That is why it is called the Double Ninth Festival. In folklore, “nine” is the largest number, pronounced the same in Chinese as the word signifying “forever”.  Therefore, this number gains the meaning of “living a long life”.  It has been practiced by Chinese people since ancient times that “Filial piety is the most important of all virtues.” In 1989, the Chinese government designated the Double Ninth Festival as Seniors’ Day, encouraging people to respect, take good care of and love the seniors around the country.

There are some customs of the Double Ninth Festival.

重阳节

Ascending a Height: In ancient times, people observed the custom of climbing hills and mountains to pray for blessings on this day. “Ascending a height” has a symbolic meaning of “promotion” and “high” means “longevity”, which means people can live a long life.

重阳糕

Eating the Double Ninth Cake: In Chinese, “gao”(cake) has the same pronunciation as “gao”(height). People do so just to hope for progress in everything they are engaged in. The Double Ninth Cake is symbolizing the meaning of “step-by-step promotion”.

The Double Ninth Festival is coming again. On this traditional festival, don’t forget to get together with your family, climb high to enjoy distant views and eat the Double Ninth Cake.
