笔者曾在
一文中，记载了1937年10月27至29日间公共租界英驻军在梵王渡桥援助难民的一幕：“驻守该处之英兵，对于所有难民，则竭力救护，往返于四十米的铁路桥上，背负妇孺老弱而达桥南，竟达百余次之多。至29日午后难民人数较前日少很多，租界方面特派救护车停于该处，有被流弹击伤及妇孺等(图1)，即由车护送，其他年轻力壮者经英驻军略施盘问，即予放行。”11月8日夜间，我守军苏州河南岸阵线因日军在杭州湾北岸登陆，松江告急，而不得不向西撤退。日军进占了沪西、南市及浦东，于是上海至内地之旧有交通线，至此完全断绝。上海渐由“半岛”之形势，转而成了“孤岛”！左侧图片中可以看到手持刺刀枪的哨兵驻守桥堍，禁止行人穿过铁路线，而图右上角一支日本士兵正穿过铁路桥。图右下角，一队前进的日军正在路边休息。

Dawn on Nov. 9 saw the advance guard of the Japanese left wing cross the Soochow Creek at the Jessfield Railway Bridge, in the wake of the Chinese withdrawal from the western area. Sentries with fixed bayonets are seen in the left hand picture. preventing curious sightseers from crossing the rallway line, while upper right a detachment of Japanese soldiers are filing across the twisted framework of the railway bridge.
