Zhou Yangming: I Saw the Truth



艺术家周阳明在画廊空间的首次个展「我看了真相」于2024年7月26日在白盒子艺术馆隆重开幕。展览由栗宪庭担任学术主持,徐薇担任策展人,展出艺术家最新绘画作品20余件。本次展览持续至2024年9月16日。

The exhibition, I saw the truth, the first solo exhibition of Zhou Yangming with WhiteBox Art Center, opened at July 26th, 2024. Li Xianting as the academic chair of the exhibition, curated by Xu Wei, features more than 20 latest works by the aritst. The exhibition runs until September 16, 2024.

限定的,完美的,可掌握,可利用。
Limited; perfect; malleable; and utilizable. 

将万物打磨成以上标准,即可感受“实实在在”的获得感与安全感。但平滑的标签为提升系统的运行效率而生,而生命是“如其所是”的自然生长过程,充满了不平滑的迂回与踯躅;真相也绝非肯定或否定的单一答案,展开的过程伴随混沌与隐秘。

If one polishes everything according to the above standard, a sense of “concrete” accessibility and security seemingly presents itself within easy reach. These labels are created to improve the system's efficiency. Life should permit natural growth “as it is,” filled with rough meandering and traipsing. The truth is never an absolute, singular answer—it unfolds “as it is,” a process accompanied by chaos and mysteries.

澄清如其所是,正是这个展览的工作。如何以艺术获得救赎?将自我掷向虚无的解构无法救赎,虚假亢进的竞争也无法救赎,周阳明选择了第三条通往救赎的道路——建构内在的无限性。在清理完浅表的标签后,让欲望与强求的意志都隐没,在消除目标的层层构建之中,将内在频率推至极限,消除与构建在同时发生,遮蔽与真相,也在同时呈现。

Showcasing what it is as it is, is the objective of this exhibition. How does one obtain redemption through art? The deconstruction that throws oneself into the void cannot redeem, nor can the competition of false exuberance. Instead, he chooses the third path to redemption—the construction of an inner infinity. After cleaning up the superficial labels, letting the desire and the will of imposition be hidden, in the construction of the layers of eliminating the target, pushing the inner frequency to the limit, eliminating and constructing are happening at the same time, masking and the truth, also presenting at the same time.

周阳明偏执地以画道的方式进行了二十多年创作,这是对“一”的确认,也是对“一”的消解。他在用最朴素的画法和图示来确认一个真相:无限从坚固中诞生,而非来自于恣意的自由。事实上,周阳明的工作与其说是对“一”的持续修复,不如说是对“一”必须存在于系统之中的持续确认。当一存在系统之中,无限才有了启动的根基,系统才能坚固不至于破碎。任何想将“一”与“无限”清晰分离或站队的企图,都是对真相的偏离。真相隐藏在一与无限的持续对抗、生成之中。矛盾是永续动力的来源,坚固不来自于“不变”的确定性,而来自于持续对抗的确定性,正如张与驰的对抗,呼与吸的对抗,业力与修行的对抗,而这才是令生命持续以真实面貌运行,不至于偏离或堕落的自我救赎。

Zhou Yangming has devoted more than two decades of his creation to the doctrine of Huadao (the Way of Painting), which acts as his exploration and dissolution of the idea of “oneness.” He utilizes the simplest technique and images to confirm a truth—that infinity is born from persistence and devotion, not from reckless freedom. Zhou Yangming’s practice is not so much a continual restoration of the “oneness” but rather, a persisting reaffirmation that “oneness” has always existed as an integral part of the system. “Oneness” becomes the foundational basis for infinity when it exists within the system, rendering it concrete and unbreakable. Any attempt to separate or align “oneness” with “infinity” deviates one from the truth. The truth is hidden in the perennial confrontation and gestation between oneness and infinity. Contradiction of a source of perpetual power; while concreteness does not originate from an “unchanging” certainty, it arises from a certainty triggered by continuous confrontation, much like the opposition between tension and relaxation, exhalation and inhalation, karma and cultivation, which is the self-salvation that enables life to function continually in its true form from deviation and failure.

Xu Wei is a curator, writer, and young critic active in the field of contemporary art. She works and lives in Shanghai. Xu Wei is the author of the art criticism monograph "The Nirvana of Art"". Different from traditional art critics, Xu Wei is good at analyzing the essence of art from the perspective of social reality and psychology, helping the public to overcome the obstacles of art history and art philosophy, and establishing the connection between contemporary art, society and public psychology.
