Toni Wereschuk:Good day. I am Toni Wereschuk, principal of SUIS Jiaoke Campus, BC stream. I have been at the school for 7 years now. This is my fourth year as an administrator in the school, and it is a pleasure to work here. We follow the British Columbia, Canada curriculum, which is one of the most outstanding in Canada. Our students are able to apply to universities around the world with the BC Dogwood diploma, and the educational experiences they receive with us.
Academic development is an important part of a school’s soft power. What are the
characteristics of the academic curriculum at your school?
Toni Wereschuk:Our program is one of the top academic curricula in Canada. It is developed and monitored by the BC Ministry of Education, constantly evaluated for its success in developing well-rounded people that are ready for life beyond school. It helps them develop academically but also as a well-rounded individual.
Our students must complete a minimum of 80 credits for graduation, with each course usually counting as 4 credits. 52 credits are pre-requisites, in English, Math, Science, Humanities, and Physical Education in G10. The remaining credits are elective courses that students choose to help them determine their interests moving forward, and to help prepare them for university requirements.
Students are also expected to complete volunteer hours as part of their Career Life courses, which our academic counsellor teaches them. Together, the students and counsellor look at university requirements, future career paths, and determine what the students should consider for their futures.
All courses must be taught by teachers with B.C. teacher certification, which requires years of study. This helps guarantee the quality of our teachers. Courses are also evaluated annually in aspects such as teaching facilities, teacher numbers, student feedback, and Professional Development resources. This helps the program maintain high standards.
How does the school ensure the high level and stability of the teaching team?
Toni Wereschuk:Our teachers must qualify for the BC Teaching Certification. They must have an education degree or equivalent that allows them to qualify as an educator. The BC Teaching certification process is rigorous. Our local teachers that teach Chinese subjects are also certified in that subject area. These qualifications ensure quality teachers. SUIS Education Group is also one of the biggest employers for foreign teachers in Shanghai, which provides us with the opportunity to find highly qualified teachers.
Many parents are planning their children’s education path. In your opinion, which
Chinese families are more suitable for choosing international education for their
children?
Toni Wereschuk:I think anyone is suited to choosing international education…if they are prepared to commit extra time to study, as well as resources towards language development, a willingness to embrace different cultures, and an understanding that international schools have different expectations than local schools. Some students mention that they think studying at our school will be easier than cramming for the gaokao, and while in some ways it is easier, we are still an academic program. All courses are taught in English, so students not only have to be ready to learn new subjects, but to do these subjects in a second language.
What are the admission criteria for your school?
Toni Wereschuk:Students must pass our exclusive English Entrance exam before receiving an offer to join our program. This serves two purposes. It allows teachers to anticipate the language level of students that they will have in their classes. But more, I think parents should consider this reassurance – we will not just take their money and attempt to teach their child. We are committed to taking students that have sufficient English to be successful, especially if the child is committed to developing their language abilities along with their academic abilities.
What do you think is the most distinctive feature of your school?
Toni Wereschuk:I think our sense of community is the most distinctive feature. Our staff genuinely care about the students and their success and want to be supportive beyond just the classroom. This can be felt in the relationships that develop around the school. We have high standards for the students but want to provide support so that students can meet these expectations.
